Other NotesThe Royton dance is described as the most elaborate development of the North-West Morris by Dan Howison and Bernard Bentley in their article "The North-West Morris: A General Survey" published in the journal of the EFDSS in 1960.

Unlike the vast majority of other dances there is no fixed order of the various figures, formations and stepping sequences. Instead everything is called on an ad hoc basis during both the stationary and processional forms of the dance by the Conductor or Leader as deemed appropriate for the setting and audience.

The various steps and figures of the Royton dance were collected in the late 1920s by Maud Karpeles from James Coleman (Conductor of the team) and Bob McDermott who danced No1. They were published in 1930 in her book "The Lancashire Morris Dance".
